The bright orange drought tolerant flowers is anmed after naturalist Johann Friedrich Gustav von Eschscholtz who was the surgeon for the Russian expedition team that dropped anchor in a San Francisco bay in 1815 surrounded by hills covered with the golden flowers. It became the designated California state flower in 1903. Flowers close when it is cold or at night, and open again in the morning. 

Grows as an annual in cold climates. Great used in beds, borders, and in naturalized settings. Requires full sun and good drainage to flourish, so they are particularly well-suited for rock gardens and dry, sandy soils where they are perfect for xeriscaping and water conservation.
